Grammy Award-winning legends Kool & the Gang will hit the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach stage to bring in the new year on Dec. 31. Before they start their “Celebration,” the SoCal R&B, funk and contemporary group will get the evening started with their party jams.
The ever-evolving Southern California musical group consists of its core members – brothers Eric and Billy Mondragon, and close family friend Damon Reel – who deliver a high energy concert. Backstage SoCal had a quick Q&A with Eric:
How will this DW3 show at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach be unique from past shows?
We will be performing two new songs from our up-and-coming album from Woodward Avenue Records, due to be released in the spring of 2019. The combination of two powerhouse bands with horn sections for NYE will also be very special!
How would you define your music/artistry?
Contemporary R&B vocals with a flare of soul and jazz mixed with an old school vibe.
What has been your most memorable experience of your career?
Performing at the Hollywood Bowl this past October. Closing/headlining the festival with Boney James at the legendary Hollywood Bowl was a rush! A historic venue which has housed many legendary Artists such as Frank Sinatra.
What are your current projects?
A new record deal, a new record – almost finished! – with a new national and international tour in the summer of 2019. The tour is called “West Coast Jam,” featuring Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Peter White and DW3.
What changes have you noticed in the jazz/R&B music industry over the past decade?
In the past 10 years, there has definitely been a decline in the smooth jazz radio stations around the country. We feel that jazz and R&B are both gaining strength again, especially in real live music, instruments, bands and vocalists.
What inspires you to continue to produce music?
Family, fans, dreams and goals.
